In my previous post I listed everything that sucks about vTiger. This time I’ll point what makes it a great CRM.
- It’s fully opensource! You’ll be able to modify it as much as you want and there’s a bunch of plugins -made by the vTiger community- ready for download!
- Outlook integration. I admit it’s not perfect but the source code of this plugin is available on sourceforge
- Adding a field to a form is -almost- easy as 1 2 3! You can easily add custom fields thorugh the administration panel.
- You don’t have to start writing a CRM from scratch. Everything you need is in there!
- Very user-friendly interface
And that’s all I could find… I just had a quick look at the other Opensource CRM’ options there are and vTiger will be the best option out there if you want to be able to modify your CRM’s functionality and want all the basic functions already incorporated.

Have you looked at SugarCRM at all? We’re using vTiger at our company as well and I share some of the same gripes from your previous post. I would also add:
11. javascript email validation is annoying because it mistakenly disallows addresses like .info. The workaround is to leave it blank on the new contact form and update it once it’s added using the edit field link.
12. their recurring event scheduling only allows for 1st and last of something so you can’t handle “second tuesday of the month” for a recurring event.
13. I don’t see how you send non-HTML emails via their system
gripes aside, it’s hard to argue with free though…
vTiger was just a fork of SugarCRM so you might take a look at it if you haven’t already. Using the JumpBox is the quickest way I know of to evaluate them side-by-side-> http://www.jumpbox.com/jumpbox-for-the-sugarcrm-crm-system

Thomas, Thanks for the kind words. In the 5.1 release (due Dec’07) and the next major release 6.0 we hope to make significant improvements in functionality and performance that would make vtiger even more compelling for CRM users.

Unfortunatly, by then the vTiger we are integrating will be nothing like the one you are producing and we’re not really planning on upgrading.
Functionality is great, but the way things are it seems like you should look at the coding style and structure before you add any more functionality.

Does SugarCRM has recurring events at all? I could not schedule anything recurring.
